About This Course
S1101 – Statistics For first-year MISPE students, Semester 1, Lebanese University, Faculty of Sciences S1101 teaches you how to turn raw data into clear conclusions. You’ll learn to organize data into tables, represent it with the right graphs, summarize it with numbers, and study the relationship between two variables. Most of it isn’t hard, but it’s full of formulas, table methods, and exam details that are easy to mix up, especially with grouped data. This course walks you through every method step by step, so you know exactly what to compute and how to present it in an exam. How the course works Recorded lessons: Every chapter is explained in clear, structured videos. You can watch at your own pace, pause, and rewatch before exams. Exercise-focused: We work through chapter exercises not just the theory. Past Exam Solving : During the course we have many Partial and Final Past Exams Solved focusing on the technique the student should follow in solving his exam What you’ll learn Chapter 1: Univariate Descriptive Statistics (one variable) Basic notions: Population, individual, sample, sample size, survey, census, sampling, variable and modality, and types of variables (qualitative nominal/ordinal, quantitative discrete/continuous). Frequency tables and graphs: Frequency, relative frequency, and cumulative frequency tables. Bar charts and pie charts for qualitative variables. Strip charts, histograms, frequency polygons, and cumulative diagrams for quantitative variables, including classes with unequal widths. Numerical summaries: Central tendency: mode and modal class, median (raw data, frequency tables, grouped data), and mean Dispersion: range, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, quartiles, and interquartile range Shape: asymmetry (skewness) and flattening (kurtosis) Change of variables and group aggregation Chapter 2: Bivariate Descriptive Statistics (two variables) Data representation: Contingency tables, relative frequency tables, and scatter plots. Marginal and conditional distributions: Computing and interpreting them, and testing whether two variables are independent. Correlation and simple linear regression: Covariance, the correlation coefficient, the strength and direction of a linear relationship, and fitting the regression line. By the end of the course, you will be able to: Classify variables and organize raw data into frequency tables Choose and draw the right graph for each type of variable Calculate the mean, median, mode, variance, and quartiles for raw and grouped data Analyze two variables using contingency tables, conditional distributions, correlation, and regression Solve S1101 exam questions methodically and present your answers clearly Who it’s for This course is for first-year MISPE students at the Lebanese University, Faculty of Sciences, taking S1101 in Semester 1.
